Northern Central Railway, ca 1865. A Northern Central engine crew pose with their locomotive at New Freedom, PA, just a few miles north of the Mason-Dixon Line, shortly after the Confederate surrender at Appomattox.
Steam Into History engine men Steve Meola (left) and Alex Horneman (right) went the extra mile to look the part for this 2014 Carl Franz Charter at America's newest tourist railroad. Although there are some obvious features on the locomotive that give the age of the photo away to serious history buffs, for the average Joe, this scene is very much reminiscent of an era when railroad locomotives were heavily ornamented icons of the new industrial age, and railroad crews proudly posed with their machines, so photographers could document the moment for posterity.
