Yes, coal is still being mined and shipped in eastern Utah, just not as much as in the past. I followed this Utah Ry. empty train downgrade from Castlegate to Price, Utah trying to get ahead of it. I got to the photo location just seconds before the train came under the 100 North St. overpass in downtown Price and began blowing for the 1st. West street crossing directly ahead. I've seen these MK5000's for so many years now that I am actually getting to like them a bit, but just a little bit. The train will continue east through Price another 4 miles or so to the wye connection to the Union Pacific Castle Valley spur. They will leave the Green River sub there and go the short distance to the Savage Coal Terminal to load. The coal is destined for the huge Intermountain Power Project plant near Delta, Utah.
