SP commute service on the Vasona branch ended in 1964, and there was never passenger service on the spur between Simla and the Permanente cement plant in Cupertino. But on August 27, 1991, occupied private car PACIFIC GROVE (ex-SAL 6502) was part of the Permanente Local's consist of empty coal hoppers and loaded cement cars descending the grade from the plant and heading back to San Jose. The car was stored on a siding in Campbell, so if it was easier for an outbound Permanente Local to pick it up, the car was taken the length of the branch, making for some of the rarest passenger mileage in California.
