Union Pacific's LAX heads up Cajon Pass on its way east. The power for this hot UPS train is the typical "Fast Forty Sandwich" (two DDA40X "Centennials" back to back, with an 8000-class SD40-2H between them, for a total of 16,200 hp). Union Pacific SD40-2H 8014 is the former UP SD40-2 3254 (built in June 1974), which was regeared to the 59:18 high speed (up to 90 mph) gear ratio for use with the similarly geared DDA40Xs and renumbered into the "Fast Forty" 8000-class just three months earlier (note the patch where the roadnumber is under the cab). Lead DDA40X 6914 was built in October 1969, and trailing DDA40X 6910 was constructed in September 1969. While fourteen of the 47 "Centennials" still exist, neither 6914 nor 6910 escaped the scrapper's torch.
