In the late 1970's, L&N was hit by a coal boom that left it in need of any and all power it could get its hands on. SCL's Alcos were somewhat orphans in its roster, so its entire fleet was transferred to the L&N. They seemed right at home in the Kentucky coal fields, where L&N had plenty of experience with them. On November 13, 1977, repainted C420 No. 1369 keeps company with other C420s, some still in SCL paint, in the engine terminal at Hazard, KY.
