In the early morning a train carrying tankers with hazardous chemical residue and propane derailed in the center of town forcing the evacuation of 1,100 people. I was a senior in high school and had a Konica TC 35 MM camera. I blew off school and somehow talked my way into town to take a few shots. Residents of confluence were evacuated to the school outside of town and were allowed back into their homes at dusk. As I remember a car jumped the track and rode the ties until it reached the crossovers from track 1 to track 2 which caused 27 cars to come completely off the rails. Sadly the dangerous reality of working on the railroad reared its ugly head as a 38 year railroad veteran who was the tower operator at Confluence (CF) was killed when the derailed cars ran through the tower which sat next to the tracks. After this derailment the crossovers were moved approx. 1 mile to the west out of town.
