Before the UP-SP merger, one could expect to catch more than two dozen trains per day passing through Rio Grande's upper horseshoe curve east of Gilluly, Utah. Photographed a couple of weeks before the merger, a Utah Railway coal empty heads up the 2% grade through the engineering marvel between mileposts 659 and 658. If you look closely, a UP coal train is visible above the tail end of the Utah Railway train, some four miles down the hill by rail at West Gilluly.
