Milwaukee Road "Little Joe" electric motor no. E70 leads a brace of diesels on a westbound freight train past the depot at East Portal, Montana, on July 12, 1973. The train is about to enter St. Paul Tunnel, and will soon reemerge in Idaho and descend to Avery. Today much of the grade is the Route of the Hiawatha bike trail, following the Milwaukee's abandonment of its main line to the Pacific in 1980. Photograph by John F.
