For those interested in the short version, this is a sign at a BNSF private road crossing with a double stack train speeding by near Antares, AZ on August 10, 2003. For the longer, long winded version, I offer the following. This sign really intrigued me for several reasons and I had to shoot it. The sharp eye will note that it was hand lettered. Having worked my way through college 40 years ago, partially by hand lettering signs, I was amazed that not only one, but many of these still existed. In the modern day world of vinyl and silk screen, sign painting is largely a lost art. In addition, it has to be very old. Railroads got rid of sign painters a long time ago. In a statement to conditions in the desert, this sign would have rusted into the earth "back east" years ago....and only after hunters would have filled it with 237 holes.
