Here's an overview from the 6th North bridge of Union Pacific's North Yard terminal in Salt Lake City. The property at right is Utah Transit Authority's 'Warm Springs Maintenance Facility'. This was all UP property at one time and its importance was diminished after the UP-SP merger in 1996. At that point, heavy industrial switching was moved to Roper Yard along with automobile unloading. Soon the intermodal terminal at 18th North was relocated to a new facility at 56th West. The large gray buildings at right were built in the 1950's to service UP's growing fleet of GE Gas Turbine Electrics. The old yard tower still stands here, but is unused as video cameras placed throughout the yard take care of the trainmaster's duties, housed in a building at Roper Yard. The track at far left is the former D&RGW SLC to Ogden mainline, now Union Pacific's main track 3 serving as a bypass track around the terminal.
