Day and night, trains come and go at Impala Platinum's main processing plant, visible in the right background. On the left, GE UM10B No.20 waits for ex-SAR class 5E No.24 to move off with a load of empties, before it can back its train of loaded hoppers into one of the unloading bins. No.24 is the last operational class 5E locomotive in South Africa, one of 160 that were built for the South African Railways (SAR) from 1955 to 1959.
Rare South African photographs (older and newer) on RailPictures.Net, where the potential to recreate them either no longer exists for any number of reasons, or the chances of another opportunity are very slim or non existent!
