Amtrak P30CHs showed up rather quickly on the RF&P, on the "short haul" trains equipped with Amfleet cars. They stayed for several years and were sent elsewhere, to be replaced by F40PHs. After being absent for a number of years the reappeared in grand style, as power for Amtrak's version of the Auto Train. On their first go round, P30CH No. 713 was leading southbound No. 89, the "Palmetto," at Elmont, VA on April 12, 1977. No 89 operated between New York and Savannah at the time.
With Northeast Regional trains, Auto Train and long distance service to Florida, New Orleans and Chicago, a lot of train riding and train watching can be had.
