Traversing the bridge over the infamous 17th street canal, NS 9280 and 9054 have just passed over I-10 and through the east floodgate portals; approaching the west floodgate portals at my back. This is the canal whose banks were broken about a mile north of here, during Hurricane Katrina - flooding Lakeview subdivison and beyond.
The huge gates are metal, and are normally swung out of the way on pivots. When a hurricane approaches, all power and as many cars as possible are moved out of the area before these gates are swung into position and the rail lines cut off.
