Alaska Railroad GP40-2 3012 and sister 3001 haul a ballast train along Turnagain Arm near Portage, Alaska. If you look closely you can see the crew members riding in the open top hoppers to the next dumping location just a few miles ahead. Nice to see a caboose in use in this day and age.
Coal and steel don't go bad. This album features long, slow, heavy freight trains; drag freights, slop freights, dead freights, etc. Trains with lots of power, and lots of different cargo slogging along behind.
