Many aesthetic elements of the railroad earth are fast disappearing as wayside detail is being relegated to generic signal systems and plowed ballast. For now, the SP line over Tehachapi still includes the once ubiquitous code lines and road specific signal system indicative of the old Espee. Newer signals are apparently being installed north of Mojave, however. I wonder how long the "pass", itself, will be unique in its lineside detail. A UP morning manifest shakes the earth at south Walong.
Photos showing the railroad pole lines. The pole line used four basic electrical circuits - telegraph, telephone, signaling, and power. Modern technologies of fiber optics, microwave, radio, satellite, and computers have been replacing the pole lines.
