As a young railfan in the age of the Rio Grande, Mesa was a rural place far away from civilization. Since that time (and two mergers later) it has become one of Utah's hottest commercial development sites. The largest golf course in the state runs along the west side of the right of way (some 7,714 yards long covering more than 200 acres...including the largest man made waterfall west of the Mississippi) and a large business park and housing development on the east. The latest construction project involves the Union Pacific railroad. UTA is constructing FrontRunner commuter rail between Salt Lake City and Provo and Mesa will host a stop along the new route. The UP siding will be flipped to the opposite side of the mainline with the new UTA line assuming the right of way. Things are rather dusty here today, however one day Mesa will have a new commuter rail stop.
