It's not very often that a branchline from nowhere to nowhere receives a complete rebuilding, but 30 miles of UP's Cane Creek Subdivision have become the exception. The Fridays only 'Potash Turn' kicks up a cloud of dust rolling over newly ballasted trackage at Seven Mile, some 20.3 miles from Brendel Junction on the mainline. This renewed life has come from a large scale contaminated soil removal project near Moab along the Colorado River, a procedure that will require more than 20 years to complete. The old, rickety and obscure D&RGW Cane Creek branch will soon become the mode of conveyance for containerized dirty dirt.
